According to legend, Jarabacoa was founded by a Spanish couple who originally lived in La Vega. Seeking cooler air and a more pleasant climate, they moved to the mountains and welcomed into their home a young native girl named Jaraba, whom they also educated and trained. On her deathbed, the wife asked her husband to marry Jaraba and to found a settlement in her honor — and thus Jarabacoa was born.
