Cristof Columbus arrived on the 11th of January of 1493 in the coast, and surprised by the shining sea he named the city "Puerto Plata". He also imported the sugarcane for the first time by 1493.
Since then the sugarcane has been one of the most important and agronomic products for the country.
A century later Puerto Plata was destroyed and abandoned in order to stop the contraband commerce.
In the year 1742 the city was refunded. Since then Puerto Plata changed to be one of the most important commercial centers of the country, thanks to its port to export products produced from the cibao area. Read less...
